You are committed to healthy eating and losing weight, you set goals, make plans, join a gym, but all is forgotten if you happen upon a tempting bowl of your favorite chips or sweet chocolate candy. You’re addicted and it’s sabotaging any progress you might have made.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are not alone. Many of us have our favorite foods that we simply cannot say no too. “Brownies? Well I really shouldn’t, it’s not on my diet, but…”
Food addiction is very real, it may be an emotional attachment, a comfort food that takes you back to a happier time or it may be purely physical as with sugar or caffeine addiction.
Researchers at the University of Michigan studied addictive eating patterns in 518 participants. Entitled Which foods may be addictive? The roles of processing, fat content, and glycemic load the study found that some foods are much more likely to be addictive than others.
Most of these foods found to be addictive were processed foods and usually very high in sugar, fat or salt and containing little (or no) nutritional value. Here are the top 10:
- Pizza – Delicious, but loaded with calories, dripping with fat and topped with salt. Then add processed meats like sausage or pepperoni only making it more unhealthy.
- Chocolate – Sweet, sweet sugar, corn syrup and cocoa powder with a hint of caffeine.
- Chips – Processed GMO corn or starchy potatoes often fried in trans fats and covered in salt, artificial flavors and colors.
- Cookies – Crunchy sweet processed white flour and sugar with many artificial ingredients and little or no nutritional value aside from calories.
- Ice cream – So many artificial flavors to choose from, all sugar and saturated fat.
- French fries – Fried foods absorb at least 30% of their weight in the fat they were fried in. Doubt this, dump your fries on a pile of napkins and watch. Salt makes them worse.
- Cheeseburgers – Fast food burgers contain only 50% meat, the remaining 50% is by-products like bone, cartilage, connective tissue, pink slime, preservatives, sodium, and up to 1000 calories. The buns contain chemically enhanced processed flour and any condiments you add are corn syrup and food colors. Fast foods contain little “food”.
- Soda – Sugar, corn syrup, artificial flavors and colors, occasional caffeine and many empty liquid calories. Sugar-free drinks contain chemicals to sweeten the mix that are also dangerous and addictive. The number one thing you can do for your health and your diet is to eliminate sodas and colas.
- Cake – Chain store cakes and packaged cake mixes contain chemically processed flours, artificial flavors and colors and many calories even before the frosting is added.
- Bacon – It may taste incredible, but bacon is fat cured in salt and nitrates and then fried in fat. The only thing more unhealthy than bacon – pork rinds.
These foods represent some of the most delicious food we may say but regarding the damage they do they are unfortunately the worst of the worst, the sweetest of the sweet, the greasiest of the greasy and the saltiest of the salty. Break your addiction and avoid them however difficult it is!
